Next Generation Digital Learning Environment [...]

The NGDLE comes out of the work of Rob Abel and Malcolm Brown od EDUCAUSE. The thesis is that we need a new architecture for learning to capitalize on the promise of Connected Learning. It moved into a Gates project involving Brown, Abel, and Nancy Millichap.

An early conclusion of the research is that the LMS might be a component of the NGDLE, but that the NGDLE was a much broader architecture.

Dimensions of the NGDLE include:

  • Interoperability
  • Personalization
  • Analytics and Assessment
  • Collaboration
  • Accessibility and Universal Design

Of these elements — Interoperability is the Lynchpin of NGDLE

A critique of the NGDLE: It does not seem to embrace recent thinking about the Personal API and Domain of One’s Own.
